Hello, I am new to this forum. I framed a stamp misprint that was in my father's collection. I know very little about stamps, and this had been sitting in a box for over a decade. Note that the center stamp is 5c while the perimeter stamps are 2c.

Could someone give me a quick description of this stamp? Specifically, I'd like to catalogue it properly, as well as assign some rough value to it. I took a picture of the frame and posted the image here:

Any info is appreciated, thanks.

The only comment I would make is that you might have been better served to obtain a clear stamp mount of the appropriate size rather than using corner mounts. Most dealers in stamp collecting supplies should have one or more brands, the most typical brands being Scott/Prinz and Showguard.

What I believe you are looking for is that you have Scott No. 505 (block of 9) 5c Rose Error. Scott Catalog Value (based on my 2011 catalog) for a Mint Block of 9 is $650; if never hinged the value rises to $1000.

wt1, just that small bit of information is a tremendous help. I wouldn't have even known how to research it otherwise. Thank you.

They certainly seem to be very well centered which also impacts their value.

great error stamp, one of the few errors that I would really like (and have any chance of obtaining) for my collection. Your dad must have had a great collection. Hope to see more - WELCOME - Jeff

We auctioned the bulk of his collection ~13 years ago, but I'm just recently going through what we kept and am cataloging/framing some items of interest to me. I still have several briefcases full. I'll make sure to update if I find anything else interesting.

To reiterate what was mentioned early on this thread, collectors do not look favorably upon "framing" stamps (at least not in terms of hanging a framed item on a wall. The stamps can fade with exposure to light and that will diminish their value over the long term. Furthermore, photo corners are not the recommended way to mount the stamps either, as they, too, can result in uneven fading of the stamps over time.

For quality material (as in your example), it will be well worth it to you to make a small investment in some stamp mounts or Vario pages designed especially for keeping stamps in their best condition.

It is also recommended that stamps be stored vertically in loose leaf binders or albums and not flat, as that, too, can be detrimental to them, especially if they are in storage for a long time.

Finally, make certain the album pages, paper and/or stamp mounts you select are acid-free and ligin-free, so as to preserve the integrity of your collection over the long term.

Best of luck with your collection. Be sure to let us know on SCF when you find other items of interest as we collectors love to look at stamps!

Thanks for the advice. This item is behind UV-resistant glass, and I was told that this would help protect them. Moreover, I will probably only be framing this and possibly one other item. Mostly I am interested in cataloging the collection, seeing what is in there, and deciding what I want to keep. This item has sentimental value to me, so it was the first one that I resurrected. I'll post more as I come across them.

tjwebb, the same type of error was also made on sheets of the #463 (also a two cent Washington) which is an unwatermarked perf 10. Those red five cent stamps are designated #467. They seem to command a slightly higher price than the #505 for some reason. A block of nine with the #467 in the middle catalogs for $1050 in my 2008 Scott. A block of nine with the #505 in the middle catalogs for $750 in my book. No doubt the value has adjusted a bit since the 2008 edition. Beautiful centering on your block of nine.
