Hi to all
These were in the estate collection that I purchased.
They look like Eastern Europe, but which country and which war?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Regards
Horamakhet

Gibbons notes that 'Collectors are warned that all the stamps, overprints and surcharges of Batum have been extensively forged.'

Comparing the overprints above with the illustrations in Gibbons, the Cs of 'OCCUPATION' in particular look wrong. The genuine Cs are much more closed than these.

Hi,
The initial question was "but which country and which war?" and remains unanswered.
This is a city in Adjaria, autonomous area in Georgia (The Caucasus). Was a porto-franco port in Russia (Black Sea), later taken over by the Turks, as German allies in WWI. In 1919 occupied by the British, I believe only for a few month. Later Turks grabbed it again, then in 1920-mid1921 was in independent Georgia, later Georgia became part of Russia again (until end of 1991).

The fakes also seem to show little to no signs of yellowing.

If you want to know more these stamps and the background to them they are covered in detail in the "Georgia" catalogue by John Barefoot and Andrew Hall.

British forces occupied Batum from 22nd December 1918 until 7th July 1920.
