"I have a huge stamps collection, some of them are very old and valuable. Could you estimate them for me?"

Needless to say 100% of the collections which are described this way worth much less than the stockbooks they are kept in...

And then the owners suspect that you are trying to cheat them!

I bet there are more than a few collectors (me included) who wouldn't miss any more new issues!

David.. I agree. I only collect most of my 'interest countries' till 1990 or so.

But I can imagine the price gouging that might start, even on minimum value stamps!

Joe1225us,

That's true. And the funny thing is that the most suspicious reactions are when I say "I'm not interested in buying those, but why won't you try and give them to a young collector?".

The common belief still views stamps as treasures which have a mythical value....

Some time ago, I mentioned my stamp collection and the response I got was :

"Oh, I would have thought that you grew out of that hobby by now"

Bujutsu,

That's a good one and I have a similar story. 2-3 years ago I asked my father to buy me a catalogue in his next visit to Tel-Aviv (I live in Jerusalem - and at that time there wasn't a stamp shop here). So - when he happened to pass by he went to the Mall and started to look for the shop. After few minutes he realized he didn't remember where the shop was.

So - he asked a guy in the Kiosk there - if he knew where the stamp shop was.

The guy looked at my father amazed and said "At your age? Still with stamps?"

I found that to be extremely funny.

A true story.

At about the age of 5 to 6 years I was taken to the place where the KGV reds I sorted came from and under this house was a stamp factory. Tables everywhere with sheets covering them and totally covered with stamps drying. The KGVs on paper were being soaked in galvanized buckets. They were absolutely full of stamps. It was like they were playing the game of how many stamps can we soak in one lot of water.

Then I saw a table where the stamps were being soaked in trays and the person doing the soaking was very gentle and careful with the stamps and what was on that table really looked interesting. And then I heard!

Kid Get Away From That Table! Right Away Now! Did You Hear Me!

A extroverted 'fun collector' asking questions to a introverted serious collector(about his collection), where people known to him are listening. Auction, Stamp Fair, Dealers premises etc
