OK, Yesterday I received a Stanley Gibbons watermark detector and am very happy with it! I was told that it wasn't very good for I.D.-ing the Washington Franklins but they was mistaken! I find it quite easy and have made short work of the ones I done so far! I'm very happy with it and wonder if anyone else has one and what they think of theirs?

Edited:
I have to add that the only down side I can see so-far is that my fingers really hurt from tightening the bolt thingy on the bottom.

here is the one I'm referring to but mine is black.

Hi I_Love_Stamps

I am not happy with the one I got over 12 years ago.

Mainly because it is so slow to use. That is the only reason.

A black saucer and lighter fluid is the best for me.

well I suppose you have a point but it is much less hazardous and plus I thoroughly enjoy spending some quality time with my stamps...lol It's sort of a glorified flashlight though isn't it?

Spot on KGV, I've tried the SG, and the horrible useless Morley Bright insta-tector and the only ones either of them worked on were ones I could plainly see without the detectors. There is no substitute for lighter fluid and a Black background IMHO.

Stalizer.

Yes, generally agree. W/Mark detector is worth £20 at most but sells for £99 +.

Sagacious collectors recommend distilled water and a Black background for items they suspect are quite expensive.

Only problem with distilled water is if you are trying to find a WM on a MNH Stamp.

I was considering the insta-tector, it's a good thing I didn't waste money on something completely useless. I got the Ronsonol lighter fluid as suggested, and realized I don't have a black saucer, or anything dark that hold water but the cat bowl. -_- Off to the store again with me!

Hi to all
It a bit like all those expensive hawid mount cutters.
I went to the Reject Shop here in Victoria, and bought a paper trimmer for three dollars.
It does the same job as the expensive cutters, and it has gauge in inches and millimetres. When it wears out I will just buy another one.
Sometimes cheaper is better.
Regards
Horamakhet

I got it for free from a friend in Manchester. I think it's fun but stallzer pretty much nailed it with the watermark tray and Ronsonol.
