I have put the stamps on hold for now. I have started working on my WWII Feldpost collection. I had around 40-50 covers before today and now I have around 100. My project is to find the Feldpost unit information and put it with each cover. It is quite interesting to see what each unit did and where they were during the war. Sadly most don't have a happy ending as you can imagine. Here is a scan of what I am doing for each cover in my collection.

Do you have a copy of Kannapin's Die deutsche Feldpostübersicht 1939-1945?

And you misspelled Generalgouvernement.

Kannapin's Die deutsche Feldpostübersicht 1939-1945 is not an easy book to get. There's one used copy on Amazon for $974. He has a second book that's at under $400. And I thought Michel was pricey. Some larger school universities, Library of Congress and probably the APS library has it. I'm sure a book loan can be had. There's another book by an author named Tessin that I've read in passing, but I don't know much more.

You're missing an "e". I noticed it because I had to reprint about 40 album pages due to the same stinkin' "e".

BAYERN1kreuzer, thank you for the details. In fact, I never believed that this cover is scarce, because I bought it in a cheap lot, and especially for one other item which was included (a diary, which was also partially forged).

Are you able to read old handwritten German script (which is used until the end of WWII) and which is used on this cover, too? I asked about 10 Germans (one is an archaeologist!) and nobody of them is not familiar with that kind of cursive script.

filipo,

The German scripts from that period are usually Sütterlin or a close relative. They can be a real pain to decipher, even for native German speakers.

I ran into the Sütterlin problem while trying to get these translated. I eventually found a guy-who-knows-a-guy-who-knows-a-guy who could translate them.

Here's another example from a Third Reich private postcard.

If you're feeling adventurous, you could try to piece it together yourself. Here's a primer.

And as an example, here's my username in Sütterlin!

PostmasterGS,

I know all of that about German script (although I didn't know the exact name - Sütterlin), and I even asked one Archaeologist, who is also a native German speaker, and he was not able to decipher some writings.

But, my friend who is a linguist specialist (he speaks Croatian, German, Hebrew, English etc.), with a lot of efforts can transcribe and translate that portions of writings. But, when I see him how much efforts he needs to take to translate these portions, I am really sorry to ask him for the help again. But, I am sure that he can handle all that scripts.
