Beginning in 2008 to 2010 several states are honoring Honest Abe's bicenntenial birthday(02/12/2009). The USPS is also honoring this event with a block of 4 stamps. The most obvious states participating are Kentucky, Indiana, & Illinois. These states have also had pictorial postmarks for past & future events. If your state has a connection to Lincoln (technically all states in the union in 1865 would) submit a request to their tourism, musuems, community leaders, organizations, historical societies, etc. for them it honor their connection with a commemorative postmark and first day of sale ceremony. Of course, this would help bring more people to the joys of stamp collecting, give us more items to add to our collections, and create future historical/collectible pieces.

You would think Pennsylvania would have one with the Gettysburg Address being a key historical event.

I know Gettysburg usually has a civil war event every year and they usually have a postmark or two for the events.

I am pretty sure that there will be a new penny. Maybe it will be the last year for pennies?

I was just glancing through my Lincoln covers with postmarks from 2009 and I counted 24 different states represented plus Washington D.C. I find that remarkable. Now all of these are pictorial postmarks, so this does not include any other type of postmark (handback, spray on, meter, etc.)

Steve,
My wife & father in law were able to attend the 3rd Lincoln penny "Professional Life" release ceremony on August 13 in Springfield IL. It was released at the Old State Capitol, pictured on the penny and also where the 4 stamps had their FDOI ceremony. The 4th penny will be released later this year in Washington D.C. to honor his presidentcy. The first penny was released in Kentucky where he was born and the second penny was released in Indiana where he spent his formative years.

Thanks, Stamperdude. Looks like I'm further behind than I thought.
