Can you tell I like proofs? Ha-ha! This is an old post and I have since sold off a few but I am now building the National vs. Continental proofs and it's proving a real challenge! I'm stuck on the 15¢ Webster...

This is a great thread. Thanks for posting your story. I love these old proofs - I don't collect them, but they are very cool, especially this issue.

Filling the spaces in your album with 19th century plate proofs on card or india is a wonderful way to acquire beautifully-printed examples without spending a great deal of money. Many plate proofs sell for under $50. I have always advised clients to consider plate proofs instead of stamps for 19th C. - especially if they prefer unused stamps rather than used. One of my favorite all-time collections was the Essays and Proofs of the 1861-68 Issues which I formed many years ago (c. 1970s!). Bill Langs has an excellent stock of proofs, but so does James E. Lee (check out his website).

I will and thank you! I usually purchase proofs from Langs as he's always treated me pretty well.

I'll have to go back to Langs site and do some more shopping I guess? This post got me re-interested in a few things.
