HELP! My 2nd youngest daughter(we have 4) just decided she wants to start her own stamp collection. What would be a good way to start her out? Things have changed so much in the last 20 years. She is 20 yrs. old and has been the only one out of 7 that was interested in my collection of stamps. I finally have someone in my family to collect with, and pass my collection down to. Yipee! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Rockin...I would start her off with the easiest and most available stamps to collect.

Let me know what she decides to collect I'll pictch in to get her started.
PS if she decides to collect US check out the mystic album. I paid $49.99 for the 3 vol set. It is very affordable and easy to use.
A couple of us have tried and I for one really like it.

Thanks Diane. I'll be seeing her shortly, and we will let you know what she decides on. I believe one of the things that finally made her decide to start collecting her own was my telling her about this stamp forum! How everyone is so nice, how they like to share, and about all the "comedians" here that make me laugh. After she gets started I am sure she will be joining this forum. Thanks again! rockin |

Robin:
Start her off with a stockbook, tongs and access to your catalogues. That is the simplest way to start saving and organising stamps.
Then introduce her to some of the trade literature like the American Philatelist, Linn's Stamp News, Global Stamp News, Canadian Stamp News, etc. These periodicals have easy-to-read, informative articles on what and how to collect, and are sure to get a new collector excited about stamps.
That's how I got a lot of Boy Scouts into stamp collecting, and it seemed to work!
Good luck and let us know how things are progressing.

There is no greater joy then when one of your children finds interest in a hobby with a parent. Mine is a little younger and her interest has started at the same age as mine did.
Of course mine is younger and I did buy her her own albums to start. Then I had to learn to sit back and let her handle the stamps.
While I am a USA collector I quickly found out that she loves the colors and designs of foreign stamps. In addition I found out there were more ways than just my style of collecting stamps.
I have decided to let her go and develop her own style and that just getting a normal album may not be the way she wants to collect. I have started to buy her some used US stamps and now I too find myself looking to obtain foreign stamps for her own interest.
I just don't think there is a right way or a wrong way to collect stamps. What I do know I will let her touch and handle them and build a collection the way she wants too and not the way I want her too. So far it is working great.
It didn't go so well when I tried to mold her into another me though. In the end we now find enjoyment and her interest grows as we work together but yet do our own style. |

Is there any particular country your daughter collect. I have many World wide spares.
I'll start an envelope for her as well.

Right now it is more subjects, I guess you all call it topical. She loves animals but cats are her favorite.
Tom gave her a nice boost since I didn't have many to giver her. That was a surprise since I was only expecting the one stamp.
I must of fell off the chair a hundred times laughing just watching her learn how to hinge stamps.
I think it was the old cheap hinges I have so I ordered some new ones.
I do have three of four first day covers I can trade if you have any cats, though they may not be in the best shape. I know one of them is folded and a little dirty. |

Thanks everyone for your help! I got together with her today, and she will probably be collecting US, Ireland(maybe UK in general) and Germany(this ties in to my genealogy/ family ancestors). I will be getting rid of a lot of stamps from a lot of countries after I get in my "50". So keep an eye out.

Diane, thanks, I don't have any US stamps after 1986. That is when I stopped collecting. By the way, I guess I'll be getting rid of a lot of Canada stamps. Will let yuou know when I do! David, I have an extra stockbook, extra tongs, and hopefully we will be working on our stamps together, so thanks for reminding me of the basics! I got so excited I kinda forgot about those. MK, I will remember your input. I don't want to get bossy and push her away from the joys of collecting. By the way, I have a LOT of cat/ wild cat stamps. Do you want me to save them for your daughter?? nr- will check out your email in a moment-thanks. philb- are you a stand-up comic..??(and thats all I have to say about that..) thanks again everyone! rockin |

RockinR Er, I guess I was one of the class wiseguys in High School..of course in those days it was quite appropriate for a male teacher to whack you in back of the head with his school ring...we all knew the game !! no arrests in those days either..the cops would whack you and tell you not to come around for a couple of months !! different times...now its all lawsuits and arrest records ! |
