Was just cruising here on SCF when I noticed an ad on the page for a commemorative US $2 bill marking the upcoming 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.
I know it's not stamp related, but check out this incredibly tasteless ad/video for what I think is an incredibly tasteless piece of 'memorabilia'.

This posting does NOT endorse this offer! Just appalled.

Some things just need to be left alone. Its one thing to acknowledge the majesty that was the ship (for a short time) not unlike saying the hindenburg was a masterful airship but to toss cheap capatilism into the foray is pretty low. Only thing worse would have been the schticky guy doing the commercial. Even as much as I thought the movie was an amazing work, I don't think it needed to be re released in 3D.

It's not surprising when you consider the same company behind that Titanic piece is also responsible for promoting similar products for tragic events, such as the 9/11 disaster and the 2004 Asian Tsunami as shown in this example from the SAME company:

They also produce those gawdy colorized coins with similar "commemorative" overlays.

If they want to colorize coins or currency commemorating special events, sports figures, political figures, etc., that's one thing, but to use that means to commemorate "tragedies" is quite another. There's one listing on their web site about that 2004 Tsunami, suggesting that "a portion" of the sale of every piece will go to the American Red Cross. I just wonder how true that is and if there are records to prove their donations. Although I suppose with that wording they can advertise it even if they donate only a penny from each sale.

Anything to make a profit...but they won't profit from me, as I'd never buy such things in the first place!

The 'commemorative' $2 bills are tacky, but to each his own. What I find disgusting are the (but wait, there's more!) telegrams that 'capture the drama of the event'.

I'm not sure what I find more distasteful here... this weird glorification of a tragic event... or the crass and tasteless piece capitalistic commercialism that purveys it.

This is right up there with the erstwhile FINE AND RARE GOLD REPLICA STAMPS (not!) which are SURE TO BECOME VALUABLE HEIRLOOMS (not!) offered by "collectible mills" like The Franklin Mint and The Hamilton Collection and The Postal Commemorative Society who seem to have a knack for preying on the ignorant (but greedy!) through taking items with an intrinsic value of about 50 cents, presenting them in some "glitzy and fancy" manner and charging people "The incredibly low price of just $19.95 a month PLUS SHIPPING AND HANDLING" for each.

As the saying goes "there's a sucker born every minute."
