Is there a meaningful identification of why one example of this perfin has only two dots versus three, in the "E"?
Can anyone identify the perfin user?
The perfins are both on the 6c Washington Bicentennial series stamps from 1932, the one with the shorter (two dot) "E" has a partial postmark from Connecticut.
If it were a revenue stamp, I'd say it was Aetna Insurance Co, Hartford, Conn for sure. Since it's a postage stamp, I'd say it's most likely Aetna but a very small chance it could be some other company.
As for the missing hole, I think it's just a plugged perforating machine that caused it. Simply a guess on that one, though.
On perfins, letters fail to punch occasionally - the left stamp is missing 2 punchouts. It used to be listed as A94A but has been dropped from the catalog as a misperfed A94 - Aetna Insurance Co.
Thanks to all of you for responding. Aetna certainly makes sense as the perfin user. I was just looking up the fact that Aetna used many perfins back in the day, so this is one of several. I assume it was very common, as I have a number of examples with the same perfin.
