New Foundland 1897

This is another stamp from my dad's collection. This stamp is not paper but a very thin card. I dont know if the actual stamp was sticked on to a card to prevent being torn or the stamp was originaly this way. Thought of soaking the stamp in water to see if it comes out but am afraid it might damage the stamp. Advise is appreciated.Front and back images posted.Thanks.

I believe it was just snipped (and not very carefully) from the postal card it had once adorned. I do like the design though.

Unitrade #64, used fine would be $3.00. The stamp looks to be very faded, as the colour should be olive green (might just be the scan though). This is part of the "Discovery of Newfoundland" series of 1897. I would keep it as a place holder stamp, but it is quite easily found on ebay in better condition.

Those were the days in Newfoundland when you could bag a caribou, feed your family and be proud provider. Now you hit 'em with your car (or they hit you!)

Actually, it's moose you have to watch for these days in Newfoundland, not caribou. Some wag told me there is one moose on the Island for every four Newfoundlanders. That said, the caribou is the symbol of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment. I collect Newfoundland and one of the finest sets issued was the 1919 12 stamp matched set "Trail of the Caribou" commemorating the Regiment's battles in World War I. The iconic stamp is the 4 cent "Beaumont Hamel" where the Regiment was decimated on the opening day of the Battle of the Somme, July 1, 1916. This is a well-preserved battlefield which I had the pleasure of visiting last September. There, as at other Newfoundland battle sites in France, a huge bronze caribou is erected on a high vantage point staring out in the direction of the German lines - very moving.

I wonder if this Newfoundland Scott#64 was used as a newspaper stamp?
