Holocaust Rememberence Day, 2012

One of the most solemn events of the Jewish calendar has just taken place, the Ceremony to remember those who perished during the Holocaust.
No stamp this year from Israel, indeed the last issue for the Holocaust was for the International Rememberence day in 2010.



My daughter was very proud top have been one of the speakers tonight and she also lit one of the 6 candles [one for each million who died].
It was fitting, in a way, as it was just a few months back that she was in Poland with her school and they visited Auschvitz and Birkenau.
It was a moving experience.
Short films about some of our founding village members were shown and they told of their experiences.
Also, there was a short text about Hanna Senesh, a Hungarian-born Freedom fighter who parachuted into Yugoslavia to help the partizans, was captured by the Nazis and killed.
Our village is named after her.
She appeared, together with other Martyrs, on a 1982 sheetlet.





As a non-Jew, I still find the National Anthem very moving.
And as 'HaTikva' was sung at the end of the Ceremony, a tear rolled down my cheek.

A hard subject to talk about but one that needs to be taught and learned by the youth of the world. My mother was born in England and lived during the bombings and grandfather was captured during the Dieppe raid so remberence is important to me and respect for all that survived, passed and faught .

Today at 10.00am the nationwide siren sounded for 2 minutes and everyone in the country stood and remembered.

It never ceases to amaze me how the cars on the motorway all stop and remember too !

I have no political agenda. I collect the Middle East and Israel is one of my weak areas. I was wondering if these stamps were issued or not since the rest of the Middle East does have stamps for Palestinians.

Why do you bring up this specific, one-time event in a discussion of stamps that memorialize the Holocaust, which effectively lasted from 1938 to 1945, was orchestrated in thousands of towns throughout Europe by everyone from commanding officers to rank-and-file soldiers to office clerks, employed the use of modern transportation and industrial technology as means to mass-produce the death of nearly 12 million people and murdered 6,000,000 Jews (1,000,000 of which were children)?

Not many people know about Deir Yassin. For someone with "weak" knowledge of Israeli stamps, I question your raising this tragic episode in the Arab-Israeli conflict during a discussion of the Holocaust. It just doesn't fit.

By bringing up the hot topic of Palestinian rights in a thread devoted to Holocaust remembrance, Ketcum is obviously trying to get involved in Israeli- Palestine propaganda. And trying to push some "moral equivalency" inference here.

Both are massacres done on two groups of people who live in the same area. If they honor one with stamps with stamps my question was do they honor the other? Obviously this is becoming political and I support neither sides so my question was simple.

How can one compare an intentional massacre of 6,000,000, with a battle in which civilians were killed.

Massacre or genocide are not to compare, they are all tragedies for innocent people who suffer them. Armenia also issued a stamp in 2005 to
commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Armenians genocide by the Turk Nationalists.

While regretting, off course, the death of any single man/woman for whatever reason.
