Here's a decent quote from one of my least favorite modern presidents, FDR, the old Czar, himself. (Sorry about all caps, but I'm not about to retype it right now.)

"THE BEST THING ABOUT STAMP COLLECTING IS THAT THE ENTHUSIASM WHICH IT AROUSES IN YOUTH INCREASES AS THE YEARS PASS. IT DISPELS BOREDOM, ENLARGES OUR VISION, BROADENS OUR KNOWLEDGE AND IN INNUMERABLE WAYS ENRICHES OUR LIFE. I COMMEND STAMP COLLECTING BECAUSE I REALLY BELIEVE IT MAKES ONE A BETTER CITIZEN." FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT

Modern_who. thanks for sharing..all I really knew about Roosevelt I learned from the propaganda film shown at his mothers home just down the road from me...it represents him as the second coming...raising America out of the depression after Hoover did not know what to do...even though his family was a large employer of the local people..he never carried Dutchess County when he ran for office,,i read that his gift was the ability to inspire the American people..but I have friends that can not stand him for whatever their reasons....

Excellent quote. A few months back, I finished reading Lord Black's 1500 page tome on the biography of FDR (Champion of Freedom). Some Americans do not like him, but outside the U.S., he is often referred to as America's greatest President of the 20th Century. Look no further than all the stamps issued to honour him, after his death, around the globe.

Phil:

Next time I'm at your place, I'll bring the book on FDR for you. Did you finish the book on Colin Powell?

David, I have not finished it yet..stamps always seem to get in the way !! I like the book...he was sort of a reluctant student until he got into R.O.T.C . In the military he excelled at every task they gave him....
