Can anyone help me identify the three envelope cut squares shown here?

I know they have only minimal value no matter what die is involved, but it seems my Scott Specialized Catalog raises more questions than it answers (and I don't have enough of these to bother with buying specialized postal stationery catalogs).

All I can tell for sure is that the three cut squares illustrated above all seem to be U411's but are all slightly different, suggesting that they must be different die varieties. They are all postmarked 1911, so that alone suggests that they must be either dies 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5.

I also note that there are some printing issues with the second example (not sure if it's really a variety or just a poor printing of the left side of the outer circle and the fact that no ink is shown in the center of the letter "A" in "STATES".

A closer look will show that the first example has very little embossing; the second example has a distinctly waved look in the center of Washington's hair; and the third example looks as if it has small semi-circles in the curls of the hair. (Although this, too, could be just printing and/or embossing anomalies).

Although the first two examples look quite similar, the right numeral "2" is distinctly different.

Any help in identifying the dies of this issue would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I would say Die 1, Die 2, and Die 4.

Die 4 is easily identified by the parallel lines in the hair, with a circular "O".
The second could be just another Die 1. Need a realy good strike to ID a Die 2. It's all down to the locks of hair.
Both of the first two could be Die 5 if the "S"s are fully 2mm or more.

Thanks for your help.

It sounds as if I'm not the only one that has difficulty identifying these die types. It just seems very confusing to sort it all out. Fortunately, I don't have that many of them to deal with.
