Hello, Here are a few postage dues I got with some other stuff. I am color blind in greens, reds and browns and could really use some help to identify these by color and catalog number. I know this can be hard to determine from a scan.
As alway much appreciated.
David

They look like the 1891-93 bright claret

Through process of elimination, that design was only used for three varieties of the 10-cent denomination. Since your examples are clearly not "brown", that leaves only "bright claret" or "red brown".

I vote them to be "bright claret" also, which would make them Scott No. J26. Unfortunately, it's also the lowest valued of the three colors at $30 used (2011 catalog value).

Assuming the 1-cent and 5-cent denominations are also the same "bright claret" color, it would make them Scott Nos. J22 and J25, valued at $2 and $16 respectively.

If you're really interested in colors, all of the 10-cent stamps shown were available in not only "bright claret" but "light claret" as well; the 1-cent and 5-cent denominations were also available in those shades, plus an additional shade "dark claret". Fortunately, there is no price change regardless of the color shades involved, so it makes little difference in terms of value.

An interesting point is that virtually all of the 10-cent denomination postage due stamps shown appear to have the same New York double oval handstamp postmark, suggesting that they all likely came from the same post office.

Scott #J22, J25, and J26. Nice claret shade colors.

Thanks to all of you. So the colors are gotten from the inside of the oval and not the border? I hadn't even noticed the cancels. Never a problem getting a mystery solved here.
Thanks again
David
