Just a curious question for all of you precancel experts out there.

I found this stamp being offered for sale on ebay and wondered about how it could occur. How is it that any Kans. overprint stamp could be precanceled from Independence, Missouri?

The listing suggests that it may have been produced either "for philatelic or remittance use". Is this a common occurrence? Is it an accepted precancel or just a fantasy issue that had never seen postal use?

If you want to see the actual listing, here's the link:

I believe I've seen another thread on this topic. If I recall correctly, the conclusion was that there is no such thing as a pre-canceled Kansas or Nebraska overprint ... esp obvious when the precancel is from another state.

edit:

One more comment. The cancellation does not look like a pre-cancel. It is possible this stamp is an authentic Kansas overprint with a normal cancellation, but I don't feel confident authenticating these overprints for myself, let alone anyone else :)

There are no Bureau Pre-cancels for the Kansas / Nebraska set. Local ? maybe but Scott's does not list locals. I'd say it's either a postmark or a fake.

Here's a link to a previous thread on the Kansas/Nebraska overprints and the use of precancels on them:

The US Precancel Stamp Society is the best source for data on precancels.
This page http://www.precancels.com/wordpress/?page_id=299 has info on the most complete KN checklist.
Many more cities exist than mentioned in this topic and the other.
With due respect for Kimmerly and DeVoss, they don't have useful info on precancels.
The Independence MO is a real precancel.

Good to know. But was the stamp shown in the ebay listing with this precancel on a Kansas overprint a legitimate usage? How can that be? Or was it merely a philatelic creation?

Thanks. Some of the stories behind these pieces are quite fascinating and not always what they appear to be on the surface.
