This one was listed as "US Scott 24 1c Benjamin Franklin F-VF Pen Cancel". What it didn't indicate was that it was a double transfer on top. Clearly seen is the DT of "S" and "P" on top.

I'll bet your were wondering if anyone was going to reply? I saw this the other day, but only tonight was I able sit down at a screen larger than my phone's and have a look at it. I don't think it's a double transfer. According to Neinken, there are only three double transfer positions for #24s. Positions 8R8, 10R8, and 59R9. The plate 8 positions are top row, of course, and this is not. They involve doubling in the guide lines and top ornaments. The plate 9 is a very nearly complete doubling of the bottom ornaments (and in fact, not a double, per se, but a different relief getting rocked into it). By the left side of the bottom rule extending past the post of the E in ONE and by the scratches in ornament R, this is a B relief. Row 2 only.

Here's a detail of a 3R8. I think what you are seeing has a more modern origin: jpeg compression artifacts.

Otto,

I suspect you are correct, jpeg compression artifacts. I'll let you know when I get it.

Well, its NOT jpeg compression artifacts. Its still NOT a double transfer. I'll let you be the judge. I scanned these at 1200 dpi and then reduced the full image to fit on the board.

The "S" and especially the "P" are the more pronounced images. You can see the top part of the P just to the left. The stamp is not the same as other 24s I have seen.

After visiting Sling Shot I think I'm on a better track and am trying to see Ben in a better light.

The A and B relief was only used to transfer the first and second row so they are less frequently seen than the C, D, E, and F reliefs. As a person starts to pay more attention to these stamps they start noticing how interesting they are and how different the stamp can look sometimes.

Winston,

I am getting into trouble. My wife is starting to think I'm having a relationship with someone online. Between Ashbrook, Slingshot and the APS I spend a lot of time in the back room just trying to figure out exactly what I have. Fun times indeed. So, I let her think what she wants and let it go.
