It would be nice that when you click on a new post on the left
side of the screen that you are taken to that new post.

Clicking on a recent topic takes me to the topic.

Maybe close and reopen your browser or even clear your cache.

Clicking on a recent topic takes you to the thread but not the latest
post. On a multi-page thread you go to page 1 and the only option
is to go to the next page not the last page where the latest post is
located.

Just click 'end' on your Keyboard and your there.

The new posts are just that, new to you, so you would not be able to automatically go to the last post because the system assumes you haven't seen anything yet as it's new to you.

If you wish to see the last post then subscribe to the topic, links at top or bottom of pages and you will receive email notification of any new-to-you posts happening and clicking on the link in the email will take you right to that post.

Or am I missing something here?
