I have a heavy-type TAMPA, FLA, precancel with bars 12.5 mm apart - looks like a 202 and matches the description.

But when I line it up against the picture of the PEORIA, ILL, precancel in the PSS catalog, the lines on my Tampa are further apart.

I just measured the Peoria picture and it seems to me the lines on that are 11.5 mm apart?

Am I doing something wrong or is the picture inaccurate or is the description wrong (i.e. are the lines of variable distance apart -- 11.5 to 12.5 perhaps?)?

Thanks.

When properly inked, they should be about the same dimensions.

If one gets overinked and mushy print - even with a metal device - the spacing might appear narrower...

Although Chasa said it best, do refer to "Note 3" in the PSS Style Chart that states the following:

Quote:
"Styles 201 to 231 are metal devices are are not generally subject to age degradation as are the rubber devices. However, dimensional variation due to the strength of the impression and the inking quality may occur."

Yes, I did see the note (for once). What confuses me is that the Peoria sample in the book does not match the description in the catalog by my measurement, which doesn't seem right.

[Edited because I had weirdly typed utter nonsense words the first time, not sure what happened]
