What happened with the Athletes in Motion stamp that was originally scheduled for release in June? How did I miss the cancellation of this one? I know there was that problem with USPS using the Olympic rings due to suggested copyright infringement, but did USPS just scrap the whole thing?

Is there a picture of what these things were supposed to look like?

apastuszak, I don't have pictures, but here's the blurb from Linn's 2012 US Stamp Program article from January. "June, Athletes In Motion. Four nondenominated (45 cent) commemorative forever stamps: beach volleyball, hurdles, diving, javelin; pane of 16" I notice now that it was not included in the February edition. Don't know if it is true or not, but this may be the first time in recent years (dating back to 1972) that the US hasn't issued some postal item honoring the Summer Olympics. Heck, the US even released five stamps honoring the 1980 Olympics in Moscow that our government refused to allow our sthletes to participate in (Scott #1790-94)! (Granted the stamps were released prior to President Carter making that decision) Seems to be rather poor form for the US when the rest of the world is busy generating hundreds of stamps honoring London and the 2012 games.

You are correct that this issue was "quietly" dropped from the USPS list of 2012 new issues. The following quotes are taken from the American Plate Number Single Society website (apnss.org):

Quote:
The Athletes In Motion issue has been withdrawn, apparently over a disagreement about payment for the use of Olympic symbols. The designs may be reused for a future issue.

February 9: USPS has quietly dropped any mention of the proposed "Athletes in Motion" stamps originally scheduled for later this year. The proposed images have also disappeared from their web site.

February 25: Linn's Stamp News is reporting that the Athletes In Motion stamps that were planned for release around the time of the London Olympics will not be issued. The reason is apparently disagreement over payment for the use of Olympic symbols. The designs may be reused for a later issue.

As far as I know, the stamp designs for this now-tabled issue have never been formally publicized.

[edit] Here's another news report about this subject that essentially confirms the facts stated above:
