I think "Mg" may be an abbreviation for "Morning". See this article about York's postal services in 1823. Times were in use. "Mg" = Morning, "Evg" = evening and "Ngt" = Night.

Have been too lazy to email Eunice for her take.

I think there may have been two collection times,
morning and evening, by 1843, so it fits.


As an aside, Indian postmarks exist with "Eve" = evening
circa 1940
