You might want to check out this link: http://www.apnss.org/publications.htmBy the way, the middle stamp showing a perfin L&N RR represents the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. That stamp would be collectible not only for plate number collectors, but for Railroad Perfin collectors as well. |

The Durland Catalog has been the primary plate number reference for over 50 years, and yes, a plate number will provide unmistakable evidence for identifying difficult varieties, like the Washingtons and Franklins. A new edition comes out about every four years, and this happens to be the year:
"New! Durland Standard Plate Number Catalog, 2012 edition
compiled and edited by W. Wallace Cleland.
The standard plate number reference for all United States and overprinted Possessions postage, revenue and back of the book stamps listed in the Scott Specialized catalog. Includes full-color illustrations of marginal markings and data on coil, sheet and booklets, 422 pages, Paperbound, 8.5 x 11."
[about $25]
Trivia -- you will also discover that ONE certain plate number of the 1938 20c Presidential catalogs over $3000.

Quote: Is there a catalog that will I.D. stamps based on these issued numbers? Plate 7574 was used to print both Scott 409 and Scott 425. Plates 13478 and 13481 were used for the Scott 499. You can order the Durland catalog from the United States Stamp Society at http://www.usstamps.org/books.htmlSteve |

Yes, the Durland is most important for understanding your plate numbers. For years I used a catalog of 1977. I had an airmail plate that was listed as very valuable. I never say an offer for it in the auctions. Later I found out that the catalog had been revised and a number of the listing went down in value including mine. Good luck in your collecting. Ray. |

I recommend the Durland also. I collect one of every plate number [single] and it is impossible to organize a collection without it.
