Here's something I've just discovered and thought interesting enough to pass along.
Just won this US Lincoln with a cool cancel labeled New York City foreign mail. The stamp was labeled as a SC#159, but I have my doubts. The ebay image was not clear enough to make out the revisions. I have a #148, but if this turns out to be another one, the cancel will make up for the duplication in my collection.

Please excuse the crude screen capture, I couldn't copy the ebay image directly.

Researching the foreign cancels, I found this website which explained the origins and usage.

A new area of collecting?

Jeff, I fear the world of stamps pulling me in yet another direction. I have no will power (thankfully).

Pricey? Who knows, but the link I provided has a link to some ebay sales, which seem pretty up there. Can only assume they belong to the owner of the web site.

This is a link to Nick Kirke's NYFM exhibit as it existed a few years ago: http://www.rfrajola.com/nick/Nick.htm He has since revamped it and has won some major awards exhibiting it. It goes through the development and use of the NYFM cancels during the banknote period. (In fact, there were NYFM cancels for at least 10 years prior to this period, but they are not as ornate).
