I recently asked nr-notrare to explain tagging on stamps. I did not understand what was meant by the term "mottled" tagging. He did a great job of explaining it and had great pictures to go with it . So I got the okay to share it here :

Tagging on stamps is picked up by an electric eye used to trigger the cancellers. There are two types of ultraviolet lights needed to see the taggants on the stamps--one is short wave and another is long wave (the long wave one runs approx $12 and the short wave one runs approx $35). Without the lights it is difficult to see the taggants and tell which type it is.

The first photo shows Mottled tagging (a mis-register with the dark bar in the center). The second photo shows even/solid tagging.
