I haven't been able to get the forum search function to return anything on these state tax stamps and Google hasn't been of much help either.

Can anyone provide any background regarding the period of their usage?

They are listed in the Hubbard Catalog, but I don't know the dates.

Nice, colorful set of CA State Revenue stamps! They all date back to 1935. They are identified in the State Revenue Catalog as SRS# CA FE1 through FE8. You can search some of the listings yourself at this link (there are some varieties of these stamps in terms of color and/or perforations):
