I came across a Cigarette Tax stamp from Ohio and I found it it be interesting. There is an overprint; Dow Drug Co. on a cigarette tax stampDoes anyone have any experience with this type of revenue stamp and the knowledge to educate me why DOW would use this, Pretty Please?

Also, any idea what year this is from, and what type of catalog one with little experience would use to I.D. these stamps? I have tax stamps for Cuban Cigars I need to look up as well.

I believe you're confusing Dow Chemical with the Dow Drug Company of Ohio.

They were a drugstore chain. So of course, they sold cigarettes.

Edit: The main office would order sheets and have them overprinted, then sent them off to various stores to be applied to packages of cigarettes before stocking them, I would guess.

Ohio revenue stamps of various kinds are found in the Hubbard Catalog, now out of print for many years. Your Cigarette Tax stamp dates from 1934 to 1937, approximately. The Dow Drug "precancel" served the same purpose as its counterpart on postage stamps -- saved time and prevented pilferage, as there would have been a ready market for stolen (mint) tax stamps, if discounted.

During the Depression, Ohio (like many other states) had a bewildering selection of taxes and tax stamps; they may have been the only state to tax cosmetics, as there are a 5c orange and a 10c brown (and perhaps others) in the same design as yours, except inscribed Cosmetics Tax. Take that, ladies! There were also Beer, Wine, Barrel Beer, and a multitude of others for alcoholic beverages, in many denominations.
