I thought I bid high enough to get this one but I was wrong. Someone wanted it more then I did. Those showing the actual plate number are hard to come by. Full cat value on a #24 is $45.00 making this a $10-$15 stamp, at best. However, the plate number clearly visible put this one over the top. Art

That the first one like that I have seen , it has the potential of being a rare fine at some point in time still in good condition with light cancellation |

Throw out the Scott catalog value when it comes to early plate number singles and captures. I've seen early revenue singles with identifiable plate numbers sell in the hundreds of dollars against catalog values of $10 or less.
Not knowing anything about front-of-book material, based on your numbers I could easily see that exact stamp selling for $100++. It is a spectacular imprint capture.
What did it sell for? |

Stampvirgin, time to dust off the Durland catalog, this is plate #8. Only numbers 5,7,8,9,10 are known for #24 (according to my 1997-98 copy). |

I put in a bid of $76.00 then went to work. It went for $77.00. Like I said, it was the one that got away. It is indeed a plate number 8, I think position 51L8. If I was on line at the time I would have made a proper bid. All I can say is CRAP!

Nothing to dust off tongman... It is not a complete plate number, it is a partial, as I said before. |

Partial-shmartial! Not one in a hundred thousand has such markings; revenue collector is right. If I'd seen it, neither the OP nor the winner would walk away without a $100++ fight. It's a thin market, but highly competitive. You could wait all your life for one that good. |

IF I ever come across another close I'll bid $250 on it and see what happens. that might be enough. Like I said earlier, I was at work, I didn't see the bidding on it until I got home. Art |

That is a nice example, hopefully Chip will comment on that stamp as he built an award winnig single frame exhibit of 1851-68 imprint usages. |

stampvirgin, in your first post you asked for the actual plate#, I confirmed this. If you want to call this a partial that's your prerogative. If you want to really split hairs my opinion would be that this is a 95-98% partial.Have a great Monday everyone!! |
