I am in a position where this is the best forum I have to ask opinions of people who really know what they are talking about. As a general collector, there is little opportunity to have an "on the ground" mentor to check my assumptions.

Here goes.

I have, for the first time, more than one copy of Scott #11 to compare. As is common with all earlier issues from any country, colours and shades abound and most will agree with the catalogue in a very general sort of way.

First - in the grouping below, are all four stamps within the "dull red" description or does the one at the upper left verge into the orange brown category?

Second - are the two stamps below Type I ?

And are the two following stamps Type II ?

I appreciate any comments. Everything is a learning curve for me when it comes to early U.S. and it's not often that I have more than one at a time to look at and compare.

The colors are always hard and I can't answer that question. However, I believe you have the Types down pretty good.

Colors can be hard on a computer and poor images don't help. You need to post better images. The best way is to link a photobucket image somehow. Don't ask me how.

You will never really find a Type 1 in the Dull Red color. That color was not in use when the Type 1 plates were in use. You ask about the Orange Brown color. I will almost guarantee that the bottom right stamp in the group of four is an Orange Brown #10A (Type II). I think it is from Plate 2E but the scan is not quite good enough.

I have looked at the the swedish tiger website many times and I believe what I have here is a scott 11a. It is type II, but as far as color, I am lost. The references in the swedish tiger about re-cuts confuse me. Thanks in advance for looking at this and believe me, I appreciate all the knowledge I find here. I scanned it @ 1200cpi. Yakboomer

Your stamp is an #11A and probably the color is brownish carmine. As is the case with most 3c 1851's, all four outer framelines have been recut. Both inner lines are recut and there is one line recut in the upper left triangle. The top of the upper label block and the upper right diamond block is recut with one horizontal line - pretty typical for most Type II stamps. The stamp is a B relief stamp and a guide dot can be discerned on the bottom frameline almost directly below the space between the bottom label block and the lower right diamond block.
