I'm sorting out my parents collection and am thinking of continuing their collection. Narrowing it down to one subject I find I like two of them the most. One of them are these

My question is this. They stopped buying these Duck Hunting stamps since the late 1980's. If I was to go back and fill in the missing years how expensive would it be? This is only a small fraction so luckily if I do decide to go on I would at least have some work cut out. Unfortunately my father also had a tendency to buy one block and one single stamp, so meaning I would have to buy five stamps to keep the collection uniform.

Right now stamp collecting is not my main focus and I pick up what I can when I can. If this is going to cost a thousand dollars or more I may have to think twice. Any help and info would be greatly appreciated.

In March, I had a run of Duck Stamp plate blocks on ebay with no takers at 20% over face. I then broke them up and sold two sets of singles, and have two sets remaining, which I will list in mid-September.

There's plenty of post-1980 duck stamps out there. If you buy, go for XF centering, and never buy them hinged, they would be darn near impossible to resell down the line. Ignore duck stamp first day covers, and duck stamps of other countries.

In truth, they aren't even postage stamps; they're revenues.

Thanks for all the info. I looked on the USPS website and if I was to get the three most recent years for a uniform collection. It would cost me $300, not a easy thing to swallow. I may try for one year at a time.

oh, just checked too, it seems like the collection goes into the mid 1990's not 80's.

Or you could sell off the plate blocks and use the money to buy singles for years both before and after where your parents' collection cuts off.

The early plate blocks are probably out of your reach, I know they are out of mine, so that part of the collection will never be completed.

I will look into things before I decide what I want to do. Right now I'm leaning on getting back into stamps slowly. Thanks to everyone for all the info.

My personal advice is this: - collect what is appealing to you.

The Duck Stamps you have scanned are quite popular and, again on a personal note, I find them quite attractive to the eye.

Regarding what the expense will be is entirely up to you. Most of us who persue any hobby at all tend to spend in an area we are comfortable with.

For those of us who like to specialize, it is not uncommon to bite the bullet every now and then and spend some $$ on that elusive item.

So, to sum up, collect what you feel is the most appealing to you and most of all, the most satisfying. It is afterall, just a hobby.

My opinion of course
