Linn's Sept 10th indicates that the new Purple Heart stamp will be the first definitive to be produced using the imperf press sheet format. Each pane will include three 20-stamp panes. 2,000 of these press sheets are to be produced by Avery Dennison, and cost $27 each. Just another USPS grab for the bucks at the collector's expense. Radically paraphrasing Patrick Henry, I know not what course others may take, but as for me, I'm boycotting this one. I've had enough of this baloney. |

Wow, I can see the dramatic change from the 2011 Purple Heart forever stamp design -- the yellow background has been removed, and the "2011" at the top left has been moved to the right bottom (and WOW, they remembered to update the year to "2012"!! No design error there!).
Of course, the 2011 Purple Heart forever stamp had that "dramatic" design change from 44c to "forever".
So these Purple Heart stamps have incrementally increased in denomination (37c, 39c, 42c, 44c, "forever"[44c/45c], "forever"[45c]...) and incrementally increased in minor design changes/updates!
Why issue another forever stamp of the nearly same forever stamp? Now I know why they changed it to "forever" stamps. USPS will forever issue another one every year! |

To make matters even worse, they will be hard to get at many local post offices.
The USPS has already announced that post offices will not automatically receive these stamps, but must order them only as needed, presumably to reduce the quantity of last year's Purple Heart Stamps that are already in stock at many post offices. As a result, postal clerks are directed to sell off their inventory of last year's Purple Heart stamp before ordering more of the new item.
Stamp Collectors can, of course, order them directly from SFS (with a S&H charge added).
Now let's see if I get the USPS take on this stamp: In 2011, the stamp was issued in a quantity of 500 million (that's half a BILLION stamps) and they have some leftover in 2012...so what do they do...they issue another 300 million stamps in 2012!
I can see the OIG auditors having a field day on the cost of printing this issue!
By the way, in case anyone hadn't noticed, the 2011 version of the stamp has microprinting; the 2012 will NOT have microprinting. |

Quote: By the way, in case anyone hadn't noticed, the 2011 version of the stamp has microprinting; the 2012 will NOT have microprinting. You are right. I hadn't noticed. I and 99.999995% of the US population won't notice. Microprinting was interesting when it first came out. But if this is what USPS can come out with (repeated design, repeated topic, just add 20+ year old concept of microprinting...), is it any wonder the number of philatelists who collect modern US mint stamps has fallen like a large rock in water. I imagine the 2014 version will have nanoprinting, and USPS will market plastic microscopes for us to see it... |

Why issue another Purple Heart stamp in 2012? Only the US Postal Service knows for sure ... and I'm sure it's at least partially geared toward getting more philatelic sales (given the uncut press sheet offering). Anyway, the "official" USPS explanation is as follows: Quote: The 2012 stamp has been redesigned to emphasize the brilliant purple appearing on the medal and in its ribbon. Designer Jennifer Arnold reworked the 2011 design by slightly enlarging the Purple Heart medal and placing it on a pure white background. The typography on the stamp did not change. |
