I think what you have is the result of some devious collector's mischief. If it were a genuine misprint of the letter "N" the letter would probably be the same width as the "N" in N. Y. It is, however the same width as the "H" in Rochester above it. Also the inking of the diagonal stroke of the subject "N" is much darker, more intense than that of the rest of the precancel ink. Ergo you have a fabrication in my opinion.

I found this stamp in an original old album, among other stamps. So, this is probably not a product of some later (or contemporary) collector, because it was just "lost" among other contemporary stamps for 70 or more years.

When I acquired the album, this stamp was not especially represented, I noticed it just suddenly on on of the pages.
