Either your father or someone who owned the stamp before him had written "repaired" on the back of the stamp (it looks like someone attempted to erase the writing) so I think it is in your interest to send the stamp to Bill so that he can fully examine it.
On this stamp it is probably a good idea to assume all cancels are fake until told differently by an expert, the vast majority of them are anyway. I agree that the scan seems to show a repair, but scans can sometimes fool the eyes. Bill will know for sure, I am certain that he has handled any number of examples of 39.
good eye. It does sort of look like it was written. The repair work was done well as I dont see anything with a 30x loupe on the lower right side (not that it means much as my eyes dont have the experience to spot it)
Well, normally I would dip it face down in watermark fluid and then examine it with a magnifier. But since it is potentially a 4-figure stamp... I would probably leave it to the experts to examine.
Physical examination will almost ALWAYS be more accurate than looking at pic.
I will definitely keep you guys posted. From the research I have done today, it seems that the ones with fake cancels far outweigh the real ones. Only about 180 have been confirmed genuine used. Based on that alone, my chances seem slim...but who knows. At least it is not an obvious fake.
