I would not say that what you have is rare. They probably have more value to you as a memento of your mother. |

Welcome to SCF Ludovic!
Your second one is known as a First Day Cover because the stamp on it was issued on the date of the cancel (September 9, 1969).
The stamp is the U.S. air mail Moon Landing issue and the cover (envelope) had a Scott catalog value of $5.00 in 2011.

Of course, were you to try to sell it on ebay, you would be lucky to get $1 for it. Especially since the envelope is addressed. |

I will tell you a little story. For many years, since 1840 when stamps first started to be printed, there have been stamp collectors. The hobby had its ups and downs. There were times when it was wildly popular (1880s-90s) and times when it was not. At the time when your letter was sent, stamp collecting was very popular. People believed stamps could only go up in value, and everyone at the time was saying that stamps were great to collect, or would even be a great investment.
Fast forward 43 years. The number of stamp collectors are much fewer. The availablility of items produced in the 1960's was great. A great many stamps and first-day-issue envelopes were created. Demand is low.
Do you have a treasure? Absolutely. It is a beautifully recorded piece of your own personal history and the postal history of the United States.
I hope this explains why your mother was told what she was told and why it is still not much of a treasure in strictly monetary terms. |

May I conclude that the cost to mail to the moon was only 10c back then? no wonder the USPO is going under... |
