I have this item that I use to apply the older stamp mounts to my album.
I never thought about using it to apply the self-adhesive stamps to an album without a mount, but I suppose it would work. In fact, I've always been of the mindset that since the advent of self-adhesive stamps, whether one uses hinges or an adhesive such as this, you're not damaging the stamp by placing it in an album without a mount. At best, you might have minor adhesive remnants showing on the backing paper, but in my opinion, collectors aren't looking at the backing of self adhesive stamps, since it isn't affecting the stamp itself. Besides, as already mentioned, few of these newer single stamps are going to be worth much above face value anytime in the near future, so it wouldn't be a great loss to try it and see how you like it.
I would, however, be certain you look at the REMOVABLE adhesive. I have both and the one that is permanant is a pretty tight adhesive and probably wouldn't be a good fit for such an application. The removable adhesive would work much better, I'm sure.
Maybe we need to experiment this by buying some low value stamps at the post office, separating them and mounting them to a special "album page" and let them sit for a few weeks and see what happens. If it works, great; if the damage is too severe, you can always use the stamps for postage and not ruin more valuable stamps in the process.
By the way, it is acid-free as per the manufacturer's specification at this link:
