Has anyone tried the removable, acid free, Mono Adhesive for mounting modern mint self adhesive stamps as if it were a hinge? These stamps will never be worth much. Is there any real risk of putting a few dots of this adhesive on the back of the self adhesive paper and mounting the stamp without a clear or black mount and then putting the page in a page protector?

I have this item that I use to apply the older stamp mounts to my album.

I never thought about using it to apply the self-adhesive stamps to an album without a mount, but I suppose it would work. In fact, I've always been of the mindset that since the advent of self-adhesive stamps, whether one uses hinges or an adhesive such as this, you're not damaging the stamp by placing it in an album without a mount. At best, you might have minor adhesive remnants showing on the backing paper, but in my opinion, collectors aren't looking at the backing of self adhesive stamps, since it isn't affecting the stamp itself. Besides, as already mentioned, few of these newer single stamps are going to be worth much above face value anytime in the near future, so it wouldn't be a great loss to try it and see how you like it.

I would, however, be certain you look at the REMOVABLE adhesive. I have both and the one that is permanant is a pretty tight adhesive and probably wouldn't be a good fit for such an application. The removable adhesive would work much better, I'm sure.

Maybe we need to experiment this by buying some low value stamps at the post office, separating them and mounting them to a special "album page" and let them sit for a few weeks and see what happens. If it works, great; if the damage is too severe, you can always use the stamps for postage and not ruin more valuable stamps in the process.

By the way, it is acid-free as per the manufacturer's specification at this link:

The item is readily available at most major craft stores and with the typical weekly 40% to 50% off coupons they often promote, the item can be had for a very reasonable cost.

Update. After a little less than a year and a half experiment, I found the Tombow removable adhesive left what looks like a grease/oil mark on the stamp (semi-translucent). My conclusion is that this product is NOT suitable for my stamp collection. Hinges do their own damage and mounts are expensive, so it is really a personal choice. I will continue to use hinges for used stamps and mounts for mint.

The product is a good alternative to applying moisture to a stamp mount, though, as it allows for easy removal of the stamp mount later on without damage to the stamp or without tearing the stamp album page.

Good point wt1. I have found that moving a mount without destroying an album page is a nearly impossible task. The tombow adhesive would resolve that, without affecting the stamp.

I just bought some and tried it yesterday. It's extremely easy and convenient to use on the back of a stamp mount. I have always been an advocate of glue sticks, but this is more convenient and removable!

I too was using glue sticks for awhile based upon some posts I read awhile back but switched to using the Tombo as well as one by a company called Adtech - http://adhesivetech.com/consumer-cr...ID=65&TID=52 (my local Hobby Lobby switched from Tombo to Adtech). I use it with mounts and love the fact that I can reposition or move them very easily without tearing the page or destroying the mount.

In fact, I will be moving my Overrun Countries series from the current quad rule pages I am using to some White Ace topical pages I just acquired and don't expect any problems.
