I was looking thru one of my books and I noticed that some stamps are just down right fantastic pieces of fine art. Here are a couple of pics.

To me, modern U.S. doesn't come close in craftmanship or appeal. Coincidently, I have the counterpart to your Scott 649 sitting on my desk.

Hi to all

I agree with the statement of tomisekji, to me a lot of modern day stamps are very bland and boring and are printed with the collector in mind. Here in Australia, a member of the Royal Family sneezes and there is practically a new stamp. Some-one wins a medal at the Olympics, print a new stamp. The post office here prints stamps for the silliest of reasons. Yes, print new designs, but maybe limit it to two or three a year.

Here is one of my favorites from Egypt. I just love the old stamps in comparison to modern-day stuff.

This really has nothing to do with stamps, but just a trivia question I've never been able to figure out:

When was it customary to drop the period (.) after a date, as in the Scott #649 and #650 examples scanned above?

In those examples, the dates are shown as "December 12,13,14, 1928." (with a period on the end).

The 2c Olympic Winter Games issue, released January 25, 1932 (Scott 716) doesn't have the period so it likely ended somewhere in the 3-years between the two issues.

The 1934 Byrd souvenir sheet (Scott 735) looks like the next U.S. stamp printed with a Month, Day, Year format and it also is void of the period.
