1861"Milwaukie" Wis. Error

Here's an 1861, U35 stamped envelope with Milwaukee misspelled as "Milwuakie," on the date stamp.



There is a city spelled Milwaukie, but that's in Oregon and unknown to this spell checker.

Larry there is a Milwaukie Oregon, so now you need to determine if the town name or state name is in error. Just kidding great find but I wonder when Milwaukie Oregon became a town? It would be neat if you could find a sister cover to go along with this one

Rick, I know about Milwaukie, Oregon, and was editing my post to include this while you were posting your reply. Milwaukie, Oregon was founded in 1848 and Oregon did not enter statehood until 1857, but still four years earlier than this cover.

Rick, here it is with the enclosure where Milwaukee is spelled correctly which would seem to prove that it is the spelling of the city's name and not the state that's in error.
