This is a color changeling. It came in contact with some kind of chemical, or perhaps it spent 50 years on a windowsill exposed to strong direct sunlight.

You can see some of the original color in the left denomination. Probably worthless to a stamp collector, as it is chemically altered, but it does make for an interesting conversation piece.

By the way, there is a variety of this stamp with red violet lettering (1954 reprint), that is referred to as an 832c, even though it commands no extra value. Here's an example:

Yeah, thanks, wt1. I found one in my stock book, too. The color difference is rather apparent when the two varieties are placed side-by-side.
