Williamsport Pa. was renowned for it lumber industry in the 19th century. Primarily the long straight spruce trees that was loved for making ships' masts. Even the British bought their masts for their warships. Williamsport is also near my hometown and used to spend countless weekends there.

I'm rather intrigued by the addressee's address of Dale, PA. If you go to modern day records, Wiki shows Dale, PA to be a borough in Cambria County, near Johnstown, PA.

However, in historical records, there was/is a Dale, PA in Berks County, which I believe is more accurately the location intended for this cover.

It is also interesting to note that in 1830, the USPOD records show a David Schall as the Postmaster of Dale (Berks County), Pennsylvania.

I suspect this was one of those situations where there were more than one town of the same name back in the day.

[edit] By the way, Dale, Berks Co., PA is a discontinued post office having been in operation from 1828-1903.

Thank you wt1. I just purchased early this morning so hadn't really had time to research it any. That is pretty interesting as I have never heard of that destination before "DALE. Pa." and being a Penna. native, I would have at least heard of it before but not in this case.

I know it is a rather ratty looking cover but I actually know it stood and when I saw it I had to make an off on it. I'm surprised actually he took it being an APS member and all. I was a very low bid.
