I came across this the other day and I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about it.

This wasn't issued by just any ol' anyone -- Herman ("Pat") Herst was a very well-known stamp dealer and philatelic writer -- well-known enough that the New York Times wrote an obituary about him:

http://www.nytimes.com/1999/02/07/u...d=all&src=pm

His local post stamps are mentioned in a paragraph in the article.

I don't know if it's worth a lot monetarily, but it's kinda special.

It has little monetary value, but they are always fun to have. There are dozens of different types.

I think there is a catalog for local post items. Warrehouse would know more.

Wow! That is really neat. I heard of Hearst but never knew of Alfie! I enjoyed those links. Thank you much.

Well, this thread just cost me $12 bucks! I grew up in Cortlandt, walking distance to Shrub Oak, and HAD TO HAVE examples of these stamps. A few MNH were on ebay and, well, ... Now I'll have to find a nice example on cover too. Oddly, I never knew about this as a youth living there. Hmmmm ... hope they're real!

"Herst," in case someone's Googling. I corresponded with Herman Herst for a year or two, and have various memorabilia I'll put on ebay someday.

I was trying to sell him my collection of 19th Century U.S. stamp magazines, but since he and his wife had moved to a Florida apartment by that point of time, she had laid down the law -- stamps only, no more books, magazines, scrapbooks, memorabilia, etc.

It is said that he answered every piece of mail the day it arrived, and didn't go to bed until he was caught up (again).
