I suspect it also helps distribute the pressure on the printing plate more evenly. As the pillars are typically placed between panes, at the centre of the sheet, they'd distribute the load evenly and avoid a 'gap' in the plate, from which cracking could develop.

I had forgotten that.

I also recall seeing them called "Ladders"
but I think Pillars for the Brit Brigade.
