Speaking of the Pitney Bowes 'dull' meter; does anyone know what type of info is contained in all those blocks on the left hand side?

Let's take note that the block on the left hand side of ALL postage meters today is an IBI (Information Based Indicia). It is also contained in varying forms on computer generated postage labels, too.

The IBIP (Information Based Indicia Program) is explained in rather complex form in several places on the USPS website. To simplify matters, here's a brief explanation one from one of the meter providers:

Re the 1 x 3d and 2 x 6d paying the 1/3d rate, don't read too much into it. It was probably just an office boy in training!

Another Neopost from 1932 with a slogan from British Rope Limited

I am wondering if this particular meter had set
amounts for each currency value?
I think the machine itself had a limit before it needed to be
"re-set"

This cover (not mine) would substantiate that, if it were true.

Nice slogan meter Jubilee. One could do a separate study on the slogans used on meters alone.

Interesting

Back to the US Postal Service IBI (information-based indicia), they are now using it on select Postage Paid mail, too, based on this example I just received today from Consumer Reports Magazine:

Rod, here is the info on the Neopost fixed-value meter, #D2.

Quote:
Neopost (FV-1, 4).
Bottom frame line continuous.
A. FV-1 machine, 40mm between centers of town mark and frank
B. FV-4 machine, 48mm between centers of town mark and frank
Values: ˝, 1, 1˝, 2˝

The D3 discussed above has 43mm between centers. The D3 can have continuous or broken bottom lines, so the spacing might be important. Your example might be a continuous bottom line (as compared to the clearly broken example)?

If your example was a D2, it would explain the multiple franking, as there were only four values to choose from. Your example would be the fastest way to get to 1/6d.

Thoughts?

I was going through some of my stockbooks and found the only "Postage Due" meter in my collection.

Here it is.

Nice one. Known as a PD3. Pitney Bowes "R" Meter. The IPMSC suggests that a Postage Due example "on tape" such as yours has a potential value of $10.

Thanks Rod
I don't think anyone will ever have a full set of meters for Aust let alone the world. The thousands I have are just a spot in the bucket.

Completion?
who wants that Al :)

What I especially like about you example, is the layout
and the typewritten notes.
I think that is super.
Your study I suspect will go towards a catalogue in years to come.

PS : I trust you received the meter covers I sent.
