One postal card, UX211, from the Civil War series depicts Stand Watie, a Cherokee leader. They spelled his last name wrong (Waite) and wonder if anyone knows if this was ever corrected. Note it's spelled correctly on the postage side. Thank you.

Interesting. Apparently the "error" is not a big deal as reflected in this modest pricing on ebay for a set of three FDC cards with the same "error" as you have shown:

According to this period news item, it was a known "error" that the USPS decided to just let go. No corrected cards were ever issued:

Guess they didn't want another recall on the heels of the Bill Pickett screwup the previous year. Thanks!

As mentioned in your original post, the side of the card with the actual postage on it had the name printed correctly, so in the eyes of the US Postal Service they probably figured that since it had no bearing on the postage side of the card, they could just let the reverse side go.

I do hope the US Postal Service got some sort of compensation from the printer, though, as that sort of an error is totally unacceptable and somebody messed up big time by not accurately proofreading it more carefully before printing and distribution.

Actually, if my recall is correct, I don't even think those stamped cards were available from local post offices, as they were considered "premium stamped cards" that were marketed only by orders placed with SFS.

Proof reading should have been done at the designer level and at the post office before they signed off on the job. A printer isn't responsible for such mistakes, unless they designed and set the art work up as well.

According to Scott, the same guy, Mark Hess, designed both pieces of "failately".

Was he also responsible for the Bill Pickett stamp fiasco on the Legends of the West pane of stamps?

His website is at the link provided below. (Note at the lower right corner the testimonial given to him by the USPS.)
