The engraving on these two stamps seems so inferior to what is usual for this issue that I find myself wondering if they are forgeries. Does anyone know?

Thanks for looking.

Didn't even know that forgeries of this stamp even existed. No they are not forgeries. The pane divider line (Cut line) on the bottom stamp should be a good indicator.

During WWI, when offset printed stamps were produced, the quality of printing dropped significantly due to scarcity and cost of quality inks. Offset print quality was less than acceptable and the process was dropped as soon as feasible.

Top stamp appears to be Type VI, bottom stamp appears to be Type V.

Thanks for the comments, everyone.

Russ, I didn't know that Type V and Type VI existed for this stamp (if it's the 1917 offset).

Yes, it is offset. The 2 cent offset printings started in 1920 and there are 5 types (IV, V, VA, VI and VII). The overall quality of the printing was poor and the offset process was soon discontinued.

As the others said these arn't forgeries but these stamps were forged, there are 2 types that I know about one is known as the Brooklyn forgery and the detail is bad and is usually brown/red colour you can spot them a mile away and the other is much closer to the real thing colour and design but there is still no real detail ie the light shaded areas of the face have no detal and are plain

The 3c Jefferson forgery shown on the above webpage seems very accomplished and would be near impossible to spot.

Some of those forgeries on the Swedish Tiger page remind me of that woman a few months ago in Spain that tried to restore that painting
