Would this be a Precancel or Postal Cancel on my U.S., Special Delivery, Scott #E14? I have never paid attention to say I have ever seen a Special Delivery stamp precanceled. The cancel is "Arlinton, N.J."
597596 - Thousands meaning thousands of towns and thousands of stamps. Town and Type collecting is fun. Town and Type meaning NOT a Bureau precancel (that was produced by the Bureau of Engraving for bigger post offices with larger "junk mail" volume). The smaller towns PO's used what precancel collectors call Town and Type or "local" precancels. And before I get called on it :-), yes, large post offices also had "local" devices to precancel stamps. Which in turns creates even more precancels for us precancel collectors!
The PSS Town and Type catalog identifies and prices [for the commonest denomination] each recognized US precancel including bureau prints. Some states have privately produced catalogs that show the denomimnations known on each precancel. My Alabama catalog is up to date, there are older catalogs of various degrees of current completion. ref: http://www.precancels.com/literature/Alabama.pdf
