Hi Dan.....

Many of this type of killer/cancel were hand carved corks, usually by the postman. The varieties range from unrecognisable blobs to very beautiful intricate carvings, many with a patriotic theme. A lot are fairly common and easily found but some are quite rare and the especially nice strikes can command a very high value.

More from a Billig's Handbook....

And a few from the "Descriptive Catalog of the Leavitt Machine Cancellations", Frank Stration, 1985.

Hi Lonedan,
Your first stamp has a negative "Boston Mass" fancy cancel.
The second stamp has what is sometimes called a "circle of wedges" cancel.

Thanks ever so much, Tom and Tom for the great info!
I love those US Flag cancels! I have found a few at the Antique Malls
on post cards--some are nice and neat with complete flag there while others half the flag is missing.

Could anyone tell me where I might be able to order a booklet like you have shown here so that I could learn more about the different types of cancels??
C.W. has been helping me but I think something like this would help us both out.
