The stamp Gods have smiled on me again. It seldom happens but every once in awhile the little knowledge I have pays off. The stamp below was described as a Scott #24 with an initial price of just a few dollars. After looking at a bit and not having access to my reference books I knew it wasn't a #24. It also didn't look like a 20 or a 22 though the differences can be minor. It has been suggested that its a Scott #21, position 40R4. I'll send it off to Bill for a cert and it'll fill that empty space in my album. Please excuse the scan, it was taken from ebay, chopped, cropped and enlarged.

Art,
I am always suprised how often a mis-identified stamp works out in my favor. I guess that when someone has a problem identifying a stamp they just assume it is the common variety and most of the time they are right. I remember when I got a mostly complete set of distilled spirit stamps RX27~RX46 that were sold as RX1~RX25. I did not notice the difference until I got home. A great deal suddenly got better. I called the dealer the next day and offered to return the lot. He replied " I already made some pretty good money of that lot that came from a Rasdale auction. It looks like you win on this one." I still have the stamps and I am still looking for the more common stamps from that series that I thought I was buying.

Daryl-- not lucky.....just knows what he is looking at.

Art, I saw one yesterday, similar situation, listed on ebay as a Type V, but it was definitely a Type II or IIIa. It might be the same stamp you listed here, but by the time I saw the stamp I was looking at, it already had over 15 bidders, and it was already over a hundred bucks!

Yours sure looks like a Type IIIa to me. I may be imagining it, but it definitely looks like the bottom line is complete, even though the perfs are in the way..

Either way-- good luck and let us know what you end up with!

ALSO-- got your email. Winston already had answered the question-- it was a Type V, "B" Relief. The small markings I had described on the right side, must have been scracthes after all. Either way, I'll find that Type Va yet!

Take care-- Thanks for getting back with me.
Ray

A couple of bargains I found a week ago and are now in hand. Spent $3.92 plus $2 shipping from the Netherlands.

A nice copy of Type I, #25 with a blue CDS:

Here may be a better one. There were 3 stamps in this lot, the #25 above, a "normal" Type III #26, and then this little beauty:

I think this one has a recutting error either #E2- "Either frame line too close to the design", or #E11- "Either frame line so faint that it appears not to have been recut."

I can see that it is an "A" relief, so it's from the top row of the pane. Hopefully maybe Winston can chime in here with some expertise!

Both really nice stamps for a total of a $5.00 purchase.

Yup, bargains can definitely be found!

Thanks, Ray

Knowledge and luck...
finding them before someone else is exactly how I buy on ebay (I have ways and I am sure a lot of you know what I am talking about but I dont want too many people to know, haha), and I am very attracted to sellers who have no knowledge of stamps. Good or bad? I am a opportunist...! Thats what my father called me...I would not take $5000 worth of stamps from someone who thinks they are only worth $5 though...I will make money but they will also get much more then they thought. I am not slime is what I am pointing out, haha. The problem with me is because of my own lack of knowledge I buy items assuming it is something better just because the seller doesnt know what it is and because I am trying to beat everyone else to it, so I end up with nothing but wasted time... haha. At least it often goes something like that. I know, not a very good way to buy, so dont any of you new people get any ideas, haha.
I just got very lucky though, I found a US 606a used line pair, a nice one! It was in a lot, a better lot but not too much money and it certainly wasnt noted! That is what I shoot for but it never happens! haha
I didnt even have enough knowledge to know what it was, in fact I have a lot of trouble with those type 1,2,3 etc, I cant figure that stuff out! I just happened to see that the color was off from the others and I checked Scotts and sent it out for a cert. It does happen! Good luck!
