Could have been to commemorate a special event on that date?
Check out the earliest known use of that stamp when identified properly....
Maybe a collector made it as a first day cover?

There are so many possibilities.
The address might have just faded away?

I am wondering if this was done as a 'favour cancel' at the time.

Organized collecting was an established fact back then and I think it is possible that someone had the foresight to get good cancels (?)

Just a guess really.

I think I see something on the bottom right... Is it a complete cover or just a piece? If it's a piece of the envelope then someone could have cut it off maybe?

Just thinking to myself...

It looks like something has faded or been removed.

There used to be an address on that cover.
