I also picked this up earlier and I thought you may enjoy it. It's a town my Grandmother and I used to visit and go antiquing on the weekends when I was younger. Just brings back good memories and I had to have it.

Here is another Lewistown stampless folded letter that was written on October 9, 1847.

The first Lewistown cover would be considered a very unusual destination for that era - Florida.

On the first cover, is that a "0" superimposed on a faint "5"?

I believe so. That's one of the reasons I bought that particular one because I figure there is a story in there someplace? Anyone know why that may be? over-paid, under-paid make-up postage perhaps? I have no idea but it looks cool.

Effective July 1, 1845 half ounce letters under 300 miles were 5 cents and over 300 miles 10 cents.

In case you want to know the history of the addressee of the first cover, one Dr. Elias W. Hale, here's his life history:

Absolutely outstanding as usual wt1! That will compliment this cover well in my collection as I am selling off some/most of my duplicates and specializing in classic material from my little corner of the planet here in Pennsylvania. I so much appreciate your contributions and hope to return the gesture in some kind of way! Sincerely- Jeff
