A "segmented" cork cancel (others may call it a checkerboard design). It was very common back in the late 1800s. Many were devised by the clerks at local post offices and therefore many variations can be found.

I'm undecided whether it's a true "duplex" or not; the orientation looks wrong, so I think it was probably two separate cancelling devices.

I agree with Doug22222222 on this. It looks to be two separate devices. When I see those "fancy cancels/corks" it immediately conjurs up an image of a nice summer day in a little lazy town somewhere with the postmaster outside on the bench maybe with his feet up on a bucket or some-such just a whittling away at an old cork or piece of wood for use as a cancel.

The real challenge for those postmasters was collecting all those corks to make cancels. A real hardship in those frontier days.

Duplexes probably didn't come to Steubenville until the 1880s. It was a rather small town for much of its life.

I am not so sure it would have been so hard to get corks. Most bottled items were sealed with corks at the time.

More expensive would be the CDS stamp itself. That is why most covers and postal documents from small, remote towns had manuscript cancels (some were too poor to afford a pen, and used pencil).

All sorts of corks- just had to empty the jug from the local frontier distillery and voila new cork every couple days. Thats of course my vision especially if postmaster also played fiddle or the spoons.

You mean a Postmaster had to buy his own cancelling device?!

Therein lies the hardship. Having to empty all those jugs by himself.
