What is interesting about this stamp is that it was cancelled Feb 12 1883 (Lincoln's birthday), just a few months before the proprietary stamp taxes ended on July 1, 1883. A late usage, but this was the only 50 cent proprietary issued up until that time. This is an RB8a.

No way. It might be the so called "intermediate paper", which is a violet paper that has some green highlights, but green paper is REALLY bright green. Look at the face of the stamp, especially behind the portrait. There is not even a hint of green.

So you are saying my stamp is a RB8a not a RB8b?

It's probably about a $125-$150 retail item. Some dealers might try to get $200 I suppose, although personally I think that is too much. Missing part of the design really causes it to lose most of it's value.

What I might do if I had this is take a good 600 dpi or 1200 dpi scan of the stamp, than print it out in color and carefully cut out the top right corner of the print and rotate it into the damaged corner of the stamp. Than I would take a drop of Elmer's and carefully attach it. Not perfect, but it would look better.
